Rapids Camp Sagana to Serve as a Whitewater Training Facility

Following the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June between the Kenya Rafting Federation and Murang’a University to incorporate water sports such as kayaking and rafting into the university curriculum, Rapids Camp Sagana is set to serve as the official training ground for all water sports activities and emergency preparedness courses.

To kick-start the partnership, more than 50 students from the university volunteered during the recently concluded Rafting World Cup Series 2026 at Rapids Camp Sagana. The volunteers played a vital role in providing logistical support throughout the event, gaining valuable hands-on experience in managing an international sporting competition.

“Volunteers are responsible for the logistics of the boats, from the start point to the finish point. In the evenings, they help park the boats and undertake any other duties assigned to them,” said Kevin Nyamai, Lecturer and Head of Volunteers.

Nyamai also highlighted the immense potential of the Tana River as a hub for sports, tourism, and youth empowerment.
“The river is a natural resource with enormous potential that many people have yet to appreciate. It presents a great opportunity for young people to build careers, while also attracting government and private sector investment. We commend the management of Rapids Camp Sagana and the Secretary General of the Kenya Rafting Federation for elevating rafting to a level where the world now recognizes Kenya as a capable host of the Rafting World Cup Series,” he added.
