Rapids Camp Sagana Rafting Course Becomes World-Class
Rapids Camp Sagana, located on the Upper Tana section of the River Tana, features a 300–400 metre rafting course with Class III–IV rapids. For many years, the camp has been Kenya’s premier destination for commercial whitewater rafting and a wide range of other water-based activities.
The establishment of the Kenya Rafting Federation two years ago marked a significant turning point for the country’s watersports sector, elevating rafting into one of Kenya’s fastest-emerging sporting disciplines.
Last year, Rapids Camp Sagana hosted its first international competition, the Africa Rafting Championships 2025, attracting 14 participating countries, with 11 nations competing. Kenya emerged as the overall champion.
This year, Rapids Camp successfully hosted another prestigious event—the Rafting World Cup Series 2026—the first event of its kind ever to be staged on the African continent. The successful hosting of the competition reflects the confidence United Rafting, the sport’s global governing body, has placed in the young Kenya Rafting Federation.
There are now strong indications that the Rapids Camp Sagana course could be included on the United Rafting international events calendar. Such a move would provide a major boost to the growth and development of rafting in Kenya and across the region.
“Our dream is for Rapids Camp Sagana course to become one of the world’s leading World Cup destinations. We have to start somewhere. After every competition, a committee evaluates what went well and what needs improvement. Personally, I am confident everything will go well. Every championship helps us make the next one even better,” said Danilo Barmaz, President of the United Rafting, while speaking on the sidelines of the Rafting World Cup Series 2026.
Rapids Camp Sagana is currently the only rafting course on the African continent approved to host international competitions in rafting, kayaking/canoeing, and slalom, cementing its status as a world-class watersports destination.
A total of 35 countries participated, and 18 countries produced 61 teams that competed in the Rafting World Cup Series 2026.
